Begin with a question

Three paths into the collection

What makes a worthwhile life?

Compare the Analects, Meditations and a contemporary ethics text. Record where their accounts of responsibility agree and where they diverge.

When is a conclusion justified?

Begin with forall x, then explore epistemology and statistics. Distinguish a valid argument from reliable evidence.

What do we owe our creations?

Read Frankenstein alongside deep learning and research on human feedback. Keep literary insight distinct from empirical findings.

Collection II · Arts, society and inquiry

Three new reading paths

Curatorial comparisons invite questions; they are not evidence supporting a scientific claim.

Preserving Your Research Data

James Baker; edited by Adam Crymble; reviewed by Jane Winters, Sharon Howard and William J. Turkel

Teaches practical preservation of context, file relationships and research decisions that another reader can understand.

Could a successor distinguish the original observation, your transformation and your interpretation?

LongMemEval: Benchmarking Chat Assistants on Long-Term Interactive Memory

Di Wu; Hongwei Wang; Wenhao Yu; Yuwei Zhang; Kai-Wei Chang; Dong Yu

Separates information extraction, cross-session reasoning, time, updates and abstention as distinct memory capabilities.

Can a system update an earlier belief and abstain when the stored evidence is insufficient?

Literature & imagination · ancient character sketches

Characters

Theophrastus; translated by Charles Edwin Bennett and William Alexander Hammond

A sharp set of social portraits from the intellectual world around Demetrius: flattery, gossip, status, petty power and the presentation of virtue. Read alongside actual disputes rather than treating satire as a census.

What distinguishes a perceptive account of conduct from a stereotype that prevents us seeing an individual?

Source file held locally

About this edition & source

Longmans, Green, 1902 translation; Project Gutenberg ebook 58242, updated 15 June 2020

The translators explicitly omit passages they consider coarse and sometimes insert explanatory phrases. This is the complete acquired file of an expurgated 1902 edition, not an unabridged ancient text. Its dedicatory epistle is marked spurious. These are literary social types, not validated universal psychological categories.

Project Gutenberg identifies the selected edition as US public domain. Bennett died in 1921 and Hammond in 1938; their ordinary Canadian terms expired before the non-retroactive 2022 extension. Retain the embedded complete PG licence. Assessment is scoped to this historical edition in the United States and Canada.

Literature & imagination · fragmentary ancient comedy with modern commentary

Epitrepontes (The Arbitration)

Menander; modern performance translation and commentary by Marie Plunkett

Uses disputed tokens, a foundling, recognition and unequal social standing to ask how a community decides whose account to believe. Its connection with Hyperides makes a strong study of judgment across drama and forensic speech.

Whose knowledge becomes persuasive when status, ownership and reputation determine who is heard?

Source-linked reading

About this edition & source

Dickinson College Commentaries, 2022; ISBN 978-1-947822-19-1; Greek follows F. H. Sandbach’s revised 1990 Oxford text

Only roughly half the ancient play survives. This English rendering is a performance script, not a literal translation; stage directions are modern interpretation. Preserve the context of slavery, sexual violence and infant exposure. Do not fill missing scenes with invented ancient text.

Link to the modern scholarly edition. No blanket reuse clearance has been established across its modern translation, Greek editorial text, commentary and performance media; none is mirrored in the package.

Literature & imagination · one volume containing two fragmentary forensic speeches

The Orations against Athenogenes and Philippides

Hyperides; edited with English translation by Frederic G. Kenyon

Brings the less familiar Athenian orator into the collection through actual arguments about alleged concealed liabilities, an enslaved family and a business transaction, alongside a fragment concerning civic honours. The two speeches are one bibliographic acquisition.

When a speaker invokes fair agreement, what information, interests and voices are absent from the argument?

Source file held locally

About this edition & source

London: George Bell & Sons, 1893; Cornell University copy, Internet Archive identifier cu31924026673131

Both speeches survive incompletely. The volume is a complete 126-page scan, not two complete ancient speeches. It is partisan advocacy, not a neutral trial record or a verified verdict. OCR is unreliable for Greek; use the facsimile for quotation and page references. Slavery and civic prejudice need explicit historical context.

The scan carries Cornell’s US no-known-copyright-restrictions notice. The 1893 edition is public domain in the United States; Kenyon died in 1952, so his ordinary Canadian term expired before the non-retroactive 2022 extension. This is not a worldwide public-domain assertion. The generic life-plus-100 notice on a discovery page is not adopted as evidence about this translator.

Literature & imagination · Middle English classical romance

The Siege of Thebes

John Lydgate; edited by Robert R. Edwards

A less familiar route into the Matter of Rome: Theban civil conflict, rival inheritance and failed counsel, framed in the wake of Chaucer’s Canterbury pilgrimage. It connects ancient stories to medieval political imagination.

How does retelling an inherited story turn a family struggle into a warning about public government?

Source-linked reading

About this edition & source

Middle English Text Series, 2001; Middle English with editorial apparatus, not a modern-English translation

The Matter of Rome includes medieval narratives derived from Greek as well as Roman antiquity. This poem is not a work from Demetrius’s lifetime or a direct historical record of ancient Thebes. The selected edition retains Middle English.

Literature & imagination · Middle English Arthurian romance

Sir Gawain and the Carle of Carlisle

Anonymous; edited by Thomas Hahn

An unfamiliar Gawain tale makes hospitality, rank and the treatment of a strange host central tests of conduct. It allows a demanding discussion of courtesy without assuming that obedience makes every command just.

When does courtesy express respect, and when can it conceal coercion or unequal power?

Source-linked reading

About this edition & source

In Sir Gawain: Eleven Romances and Tales, Middle English Text Series, 1995, pp. 85–112

Keep this Middle English poem distinct from the later seventeenth-century Carle of Carlisle; do not transfer episodes between versions. Gendered exchanges and constrained agency require criticism, not uncomplicated endorsement. This is Arthurian romance, not evidence of an historical Arthur.

Literature & imagination · Middle English Charlemagne romance

The Sultan of Babylon (The Sowdone of Babylone)

Anonymous; edited by Alan Lupack

Introduces the Charlemagne cycle through Ferumbras, Floripas and Laban: loyalties, religious conversion, power and action across hostile camps. Floripas creates a useful point of comparison with agency in Menander and the Gawain tale.

How does a narrative make an adversary recognisable or alien, and who is allowed to cross that boundary?

Source-linked reading

About this edition & source

In Three Middle English Charlemagne Romances, Middle English Text Series, 1990

The Matter of France is a cycle classification, not a claim that this Middle English work was composed in French. Its Christian polemical representation is not a reliable account of Islam or of actual Carolingian events. Preserve the Middle English and the editor’s historical context.
